Plugin Info

My Category Order was released in 2006 and has been compatible with every version of WordPress from 1.5 to 2.8.5. It went through a lot of changes, but the effort needed to keep it backwards compatible was quite burdensome. Breaking support for versions of WP older than 2.8 allowed for the inclusion of a more powerful widget and the removal of the horrible taxonomy.php patch (believe me I hated it more than anyone).

The most exciting change comes from the move to the new Widget API. It makes adding support for multiple widget instances a snap. Rewriting the widget code also allowed me to add widget options for nearly every single parameter normally available to the wp_list_categories template function. If you were being held back by the lack of options on the built in Categories widget then definitely check that out.

7/2/11: WP 3.1.4 broke the plugin. The newest version of the plugin (3.1.4) fixes this, but might require changes on your end. If you use widgets then you are good to go. If you use wp_list_bookmarks in your template, then just change that to mylinkorder_list_bookmarks(). It does the exact same thing, but allows the custom ordering.

Installation Help (thanks to Ken down in the comments)

Step One: Go to “Widgets” under the “Appearance” tab. Drag the “Links” widget off the sidebar in order to deactivate it. Then, drag the “My Link Order” widget where you want your links to appear.

Step Two: Click on “My Link Order” to get to the settings. Be sure to set “Category Order By:” and “Link Order By:” to “My Order.” This is what allows you to set your links in whatever order you want the widget to display them in.

Step Three: Click on “My Link Order” under the “Links” tab. In the lower section are your link categories, in boxes. Drag and drop these to order your categories, and then click on the button “Click to Order Categories.” Now your categories will be in the order you want them.

Step Four: in the upper section, under “Order Link” click on the drop-down menu in order to select which category you want to order first. Then click on “Order Links in this Category.” Your links will then appear in little boxes and the widget will say “Order the links by dragging and dropping them into the desired order.” Do so. Then click the button below that says “Click to Order Links.” The links in that category will now be in the order you select. Click on the “Go Back” link to order the links in your other categories the same way. (You need to do this for each category, unless you have a category you don’t care about the order of.)

Plugin Info

My Page Order was released in 2006 and has been compatible with every version of WordPress from 1.5 to 2.8.5. It went through a lot of changes, but the effort needed to keep it backwards compatible was quite burdensome. As of version 2.8.6 of the plugin, it will only support WP 2.8 or above.

With the break in compatibility I’m able to take advantage of the new Widget API. It makes adding support for multiple widget instances a snap. Rewriting the widget code also allowed me to add widget options for nearly every single parameter normally available to the wp_list_pages template function. If you were being held back by the lack of options on the built in Pages widget then definitely check that out.

I first published my WordPress plugins back in 2006 and in that time they’ve been downloaded hundreds of thousands times by people all over the world. I’ve exchanged thousands of emails with people running into problems or just saying thank you. I enjoy making myself available to help others, but it can be tough to find the motivation and time to keep it up.

If you find my plugins useful and wanted to say thank you, there are a couple things you could do:

Amazon Gift Card

I love Amazon and a gift card doesn’t have any fees like PayPal. Send me a gift card at froman118@gmail.com. Leave a comment here or include your email in the gift card note so I can say thank you.

Donation

Make a small donation through Paypal. Just a couple dollars is more than enough to make my day and I’m blown away whenever I receive a donation.

Web Hosting Referral

I host with the excellent company StableHost. They offer very fast hosting at competitive prices and I can’t recommend them highly enough.

Read my StableHost review with the latest coupons

If you aren’t able to do either of the above, post a comment and say thank you. I like to hear from the people who are using my plugins.

The release of WP 2.7 is scheduled for the 10th and I’ve already installed RC1 and have been thoroughly impressed so far. The admin area and menus have been completely overhauled and the results are great. I highly recommend the upgrade.

The update also added nice stuff that was previously accomplished with plugins. The Dashboard is a lot more customizable now. Plugins can now be installed from within WordPress by either searching the Extend repository or uploading a zip. You can also delete plugins too so that eliminates most of the need for FTP access.

I updated my plugins to be compatible with 2.7 so grab those updates.

I’m also getting ready to start building up my photo gallery at Picasa and sticking to an organization system that works. Picasa 3 is a very nice piece of software to help accomplish that.

If you subscribe to my comments feed you probably see all the comments related to my plugins. Over the past 2 years I’ve had a thousand comments and probably at least another thousand emails exchanged with WordPress users. I must have found a pretty good niche with my ordering plugins considering My Page order hit the second page in the list of Popular plugins on the WordPress Extend site. There’s about 2000 plugins on the site and I’m coming in at around #19. That’s pretty sweet.

You might be wondering what these “Shared” posts are. Most of my web surfing consists of reading my RSS subscriptions in Google Reader, all 146 of them. On a given day I might find one or two things that I think other people would want to read. Google Reader lets you share items with your “friends”, but there’s no way to have a discussion about the content.

A while back I was trying to figure out a way to share those “shared” items with a wider audience. I stuck a link in the sidebar to my shared item page, but I doubt anybody uses it. What I really wanted to do was have WordPress automatically create posts with a link to the content I mark in Google Reader. The WP-o-matic plugin does exactly what I want.

Setting up the plugin involves creating a CRON job on the server and setting up a feed to check periodically. You can customize the content of the post that gets created; I opted for a little blurb and a link to the content. I wanted to modify the title that gets created which isn’t an available option so I modified the plugin to do that for me. I also set it to save posts as drafts so I can assign a category and tags and maybe some of my thoughts before Google Reader gets a hold of it and caches it forever.

So these shared posts are really the cream of the crop of my subscriptions and I’d love to have people share things they find. I like the fact that whenever shared items show up in Google Reader from my friends they are of high quality and worth the read even though it might be outside my immediate area of interest.
