This will be our first Christmas on our own and it has led to some interesting developments. I’m down for just sleeping in and having a nice relaxing morning. Anybody have stories about their first married Christmas or adjustments that had to be made in family traditions? And of course our first Christmas tree.
Last time was a little too easy. The shape of the tine and the metal gave it away, but if it was just a picture of scratched up metal it would have been too generic. This time there’s no dead giveaway and I got an old 24mm manual focus lens off Ebay to reverse and give me more magnification. Good luck! Finally got some of the panoramas I took in Hawaii stitched together and there’s 2 I want to share that I really like. The shot of the river was kind of by accident, we were driving on the bypass road south of Lihue and happened up a turnout with a nice view of the Menehune Fishpond and the river going into Nawiliwili Bay. The canyon shot is Waimea canyon over on the west side of Kauai; the drive all the way up is well worth it since it ends in a view of the Napali Coast. Enjoy.

If you missed out on Macro Mystery #1 check it out for a little background on how I actually took the photo. This time around I used a reversing adapter that let’s me mount a 50mm lens backwards, giving me the magnification I need. I also used a tripod so I could fine tune the focus. So here goes.
Update: The image covers about 1/4 inch square and to keep people guessing longer I’ve made the text of correct answers white. So if you get stuck highlight the comments with blank spaces.
Let’s play a game I like to call “Tell Me What This Is A Picture Of”! I was tinkering around and read up a little on macro photography. Turns out you can stack lenses and by some sort of optical magic you get a nice super duper macro lens. So I opened my 50mm f/1.8 up to f/1.8, held it to the front of my 18-200mm, setup a manual exposure (f/16, 1/250), and setup my flash (1/8 power) to fire remotely off camera. My lenses normally only focus down to about a foot, even at 200mm that doesn’t get you terribly close. Stacking the lenses let me focus at a little less than one inch because of previously mentioned optical magic; only problem is the depth of field is only several millimeters. Such a small depth of field makes focusing hard, really hard.
Since Kevin doesn’t do MindTrap Monday anymore I figured we needed some sort of riddle posts going on. So who will be the first to guess what the Macro Mystery shot below is of? Hint about scale: The image covers about 1/4 inch square.

Took a trip down to San Diego over Labor Day weekend and needed to entertain ourselves during the day so we thought it would be fun to go to the Wild Animal Park. Got there in the morning but it quickly became super duper hot, but I still managed to get some decent shots. Click the lion for the gallery.
Denise will probably be the only person that finds this interesting, but Leaf Cat paid Sarah and me a visit the other night. For the rest of you, Denise named the neighborhood cat “Leaf Cat” because she saw it walking around the condo complex with a leaf in its mouth. She decided she wanted to stop by, take a tour of the place, get some noggin scratching and then take off. Good times.
Newest batch of pictures are up from our parties 2 weeks before the wedding. Girls had fun at the Mai Tai Lounge and the guys busted out the Wii, war, and rock-paper-scissors. Good times.
Hawaii + 3 cameras = 900+ images but I managed to whittle it down to 220. Some might be a little redundant but there’s some pretty nice shots in there. I’ll be posting some very NICE panoramic shots of Waimea Canyon and some other beautiful locations soon.
