Obama rallies Democrats with tough partisan speech

“We can’t embrace the losing formula that says only tax cuts will work for every problem we face; that ignores critical challenges like our addiction to foreign oil, or the soaring cost of health care, or falling schools and crumbling bridges and roads and levees.”

“They didn’t vote for the status quo — they sent us here to bring change.”

“Then there’s the argument, well, this is full of pet projects. When was the last time that we saw a bill of this magnitude move out with no earmarks in it? Not one. (Applause.)”

“Millions more Americans will lose their jobs. Homes will be lost. Families will go without health care. Our crippling dependence on foreign oil will continue. That is the price of inaction.”

“I believe that legislation of this enormous magnitude, that by necessity we are moving quickly — we’re not moving quickly because we’re trying to jamb something down people’s throats. We’re moving quickly because we’re told that if we don’t move quickly, that the economy is going keep on getting worse, and we’ll have another 2 or 3 or 4 million jobs loss this year.”

“Number two, it is expected that we are going to lose about a trillion dollars worth of demand this year, a trillion dollars of demand next year because of the contraction in the economy. So the reason that this has to be big is to try to fill some of that lost demand. And as it is, there are many who think that we should be doing even more. (Applause.) So we are taking prudent steps.”

“So then you get the argument, well, this is not a stimulus bill, this is a spending bill. What do you think a stimulus is? (Laughter and applause.) That’s the whole point. No, seriously. (Laughter.) That’s the point. (Applause.) “

“But let’s think big right now. Let’s not think small. Let’s not think narrowly.”

“This plan will save or create over three million jobs — almost all of them in the private sector.”

No price tag is too big if we believe it will solve all of our problems.

Just a sample of what I overheard at the office the morning after the election:

Worried Obama will be assassinated

Cheney is evil

Sarah Palin can just go back to Alaska and shoot moose

Maybe Cheney will join her and shoot each other

Glad it was an ass-whooping

It become a world election, change in the rest of the world now

Floodgates to a new world, less polarized

Unify as one American people

It’s a very proud day for African-Americans

Now I can tell my grandchildren they can be whatever they want

It’s a new day, it’s a new world

Kssschhhh, Houston, the “one” has landed.

Whole lot won’t change immediately in January, but if you had any plans of buying a firearm in the next couple years I’d accelerate those plans.

Proposition results were a mixed bag. Too bad 1A passed, but I’m glad 11 passed so we can get some districts that make sense. No to gay marriage, but no to parental notification, really California?

And that ends the deluge of political posts. Juicy D90 vs D70 comparisons coming soon.

Obama: “I’m Not Going to Take Your Guns Away”

He tells a group of workers at a Pennsylvania glass factory that he wouldn’t take away any of their guns even if he had the votes in Congress and just wants to keep them out of the hands of gang bangers and drug dealers (which the law already prohibits, funny how criminals don’t obey the law) . The problem is he doesn’t say anything about carrying in public and future gun purchases or other restrictions. Sure he might leave the guns I currently have alone, but what does the future hold? The best indicator for the future is Obama and Biden’s positions in the past on gun control.

Obama quotes from OnTheIssues.org

Obama’s votes in Illinois Senate

Obama quotes on gun control

Biden thinks gun owner should have head examined

Novak on Obama Gun Control Dance

Little bit of everything in there. The funny thing is Obama is starting to move to the center a little now that he doesn’t have to compete against other Democrats. Previously, there was confusion about whether or not he supported the DC Handgun ban that was recently overturned. He now says he thinks the 2nd Amendment gives an individual right, but so far his voting record demonstrates he wants to limit and closely regulate those rights. Biden is definetely far to the left and this liberal thinks they should cover up his views on gun control because it might lead to a Democratic loss.

Stay on topic and please site references or statistics to back up any arguments like “banning handguns reduces crime”. Gun control might not seem like a big deal, but there are plenty of people clinging to their guns and religion who take it very seriously. If you want an analysis on McCain and Palin positions I can put that together too.

I would be able to respect liberals if they devoted more attention to the issues. I just overheard a phone conversation at work that went something like this, “Obama spoke for about 44 minutes and it was wonderful. He bashed on McCain so hard. The news wanted to talk to undecided voters, but there’s like a billion people here, so he won’t be able to please everyone. Why don’t they just get on board.” I kid you not the person said “billion”.

I watched his speech last night and all I got out of it was that Obama is the best person for the job because McCain is like Bush. Not because he has more well thought out policies or more experience. That’s going to be the main Democratic strategy for the rest of the campaign, connect McCain and Bush whenever possible. You won’t hear specifics on Obama’s long term policies because they are way to far to the left for people in the center. Instead we’ll be fed more rhetoric and one line “burns”.

I’m glad Obama is going after McCain because it just opens the door for a fierce counter-attack. I want McCain to hit back HARD and paint Obama as the quasi-Socialist that he is. I’m looking forward to the debates where the two of them have to speak side-by-side.

Looks like McCain has picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin which is exciting from what I’ve read about here. Will have to do some research on her once the decision is final. Oh reminds me, Biden = yawwwwwn.
