Shouting across the cubicle aisle

I have the privilege of sitting in cube land and I get to overhear many enlightening conversations. Several times a week I’ll hear rants about how stupid and evil Bush is. Just heard someone make a big deal about Cindy McCain being the same age as John’s sons from his first marriage. Or that the Republicans only picked a woman VP because Obama is black. You name it and I’ve probably been forced to listen to it.

But this brings up a related issue, why are those on the Left so eager to shout their point of view. I’ve seen many liberals tend to think everyone around them is of like mind or that they have the right to make people listen to them. And even if you express your conservative view, you more than likely end up defending yourself against personal attacks rather than your actual position. If you disagree on an issue then there’s something wrong with you rather than the reasoning behind your stance.

Yes, there are exceptions to the rule, but this is just what I’ve experienced working in a union shop and living in a liberal area. Any insights from either side of the aisle?

Maybe it’s just where I work, but there is a good size group of us who are conservative. I remember at the beginning though I would tip toe around the issue until you would find out “oh you’re one of us!”

But at least for me, I would never come out and say something negative about Obama to someone if I didn’t know their viewpoint. Now if they started a political discussion I’d be glad to join in, but just letting stuff fly because I think everyone else agrees…never.

We’ve got a little group of conservatives and we tend to keep ourselves. One of my co-workers got in a debate with a lefty who finished the conversation with an attack like “you need help if you vote for a Republican”. As he walked by my cube I spun around and told him that I guess I needed help too.

If you want to make a real political statement in the office you would shoot everyone who disagrees with you with a nerf gun.
