Blog facelift

September 9th, 2006 at 04:32pm

Things were getting a little old around the blog so I spruced things up a bit. Ditched the nav bar across the top, it was a bit of a pain to work with. Put login stuff in the sidebar like Nathan has on the Blarg, RSS buttons down at the bottom (which you should use, if you don’t know how or why please ask) and a thing for my flickr account. There should be more changes and more posts coming.

login fields and search field are a little large in case you haven’t seen them.

here’s a cool fix I found so when you login it dumps you back to the mainpage you were at, instead of to the profile edit screen.

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and the idea behind it is to publish a site’s content in a standardized way. My post feed contains all of my recent posts. You can subscribe to a feed with a feed reader (either web based or a program on your computer) that checks the feed every so often for updates. It then tells you when a certain site has been updated. So instead of having to go through everyone’s blog a couple times a day, I get notified every 30 minutes about updates to the feeds I have subscribed to. I’ll do a more detailed post about it soon.

so does that comments button mean that it will tell me when people have commented on this site as well?

I’d suggest using google reader… you can *subscribe* to RSS feeds of your favorite blog (or other news sites if you wish).

Using google reader is easy, you login to your reader account and there you will be presented with new posts and comments (if you add that feed) of all your favorite blogs in one spot. It’s much better than having to visit 5 or 6 different sites multiple times each day.
